Snarky Puppy is a leading contemporary fusion band that was formed in Texas in 2003. Now the musicians are based in Brooklyn, New York. At various times, dozens of musicians have been members of the band. Many of them are now the leaders of their own projects, and collaborate with pop stars (such as Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and D’Angelo). Snarky Puppy has won three Grammy Awards (Best R&B Performance 2014, and Best Instrumental album 2016 and 2017).
Initially, the band was set to be a kind of a free music platform where artists of different genres could meet and try to create something new. The distinctive feature of the band is also a synthesis of cultures: musicians from Japan, Argentina, Canada, Great Britain, and Puerto Rico have played with Snarky Puppy. All this makes the band unique and idiosyncratic.
Snarky Puppy was founded by bassist and composer Michael League. Snarky Puppy has released more than 10 albums and is a many-time winner of DownBeat and Jazztimes magazine audience survey in the Band of the Year category. The most recent work by Snarky Puppy, Immigrance, was released in March 2019.
